Dept. Of FORENSIC MEDICINE & TOXICOLOGY- NAIHS-COM

VISION:

To teach and continually emphasize forensic medicine foundational principles in all aspects of Law & Medicine and instructions to help produce a future generation of competent, credible and ethical forensic experts. Further to develop the field of Forensic to any international standard by introducing medicolegal services and toxicology in future.


GOALS:

The goal of the teaching of Forensic Medicine to under graduate and Post Graduate students is to produce a competent Physician with knowledge of medicine law and ethics.

1. He/she should be able to provide basic services in relation with medicolegal responsibilities in the practice of medicine and help the justice system in crime investigation.

2. He/she has acquired knowledge of law in relation to practice of medicine, medical negligence and investigation of crime against human beings.

3. Should be aware of code of medical ethics consistent with national health policy and law of the land.

4. To prepare them to handle any situation in times of natural disasters so to act as mass disaster task force.


OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course, the student shall be able to

1.Conduct a meticulous medicolegal autopsy, collect appropriate evidences pertaining to investigation in medicolegal care.

2.Should be able to visit the scene of crime to identify and help police to collect evidences related to crime.

3.Should here fundamental knowledge of all branches of medical disciplines so that a combined knowledge could be applied to medicolegal situations.

4.Should be aware of laws in relation to medicolegal work and medical practice.

5.Be aware of legal/court procedures applicable to medicolegal practice.

6.Should have knowledge of preservation and dispatch of medocolegal specimen to appropriate departments for proper reports and perfect justice.

7.Should manage medicolegal implication, diagnosis and principles of management of common poisoning cases.

8.Should have knowledge of his/her social and legal responsibilities as to reporting of HIV cases, and other communicable diseases and crimes.

9.Should be able to proceed with identification in cases of unidentified bodies and mass diaster.






INTRODUCTION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department has an upgraded museum with specimen/ photographs/ charts on display as learning tools. The museum also has arms and ammunition on display. Students are encouraged with practical projects to study various aspects of crime related topics. This helps them in future while writing thesis during their post graduate courses. The department has two demonstration Halls. One is equipped with LCD projector. These are used for small group teachings and discussions.

There is a well equipped laboratory with binocular microscopes and x-ray view boxes on which students are trained in Forensic Pathology and Forensic Radiology.

The department has its own library where faculty and students can read in free time.

There is a Toxicology garden where common Toxic plants are grown so that students can have hand on experience while learning Toxicology.










INTRODUCTION OF HEAD OF THE DEPT.



The department of Forensic Medicine is headed by Prof. Dr.Promod Kumar Shrestha who has vast experience on teaching learning to various level of medical students and training to the doctor, police, lawyers and judges .He has been involved in disaster victim identification(DVI) in various natural and unnatural mass disaster. He has been involved in various exhumation conducted by the Nepal Police and Human Right Commission. He has been awarded with "Shikshya Padak" by ministry of Education, Goverment of Nepal and "Dirgha-Sewa Padak" by T.U. He is a fellow of Indian Association of medicolegal Expert.
