Under the NAIHS Health Research Policy, developed under the guidance of National Health Research Policy, NAIHS establish an Institutional Review Committee (IRC) on Ashad 2070 ( June 2013) to facilitate governance and management of research activities in NAIHS and it work within the framework of highest possible ethical and the scientific standards in biomedical research.
Institutional Review Committee (IRC) constitutes 7 members’ before and now 9 members representatives from different subjects of this institute. In addition to IRC, Health Research Policy and guidelines, IRC team, its role and responsibilities had been developed by NAIHS. This IRC have been approved by Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC) on Bhadra 2071(5th Sept, 2014). This IRC has been designated for ethical approve, monitor, and review biomedical and behavioral research involving humans in this institute.
Role of an IRC
•To safeguard the dignity, right, safety & wel1 being of al1 the research participants. It should always take into considerations the basic principles of ethics as dignity/respect of the person, the value of beneficences, justice etc. without compromising the scientific merit and quality of research.
•The IRC should provide independent, competent, and timely review, approve, require modifications in (to secure approval), or disapprove all research activities covered by institutional health research policy prior to the commencement of the research.
•The IRC should be aware of and fol1ow the Ethical Guidelines for the Care and Use of Animals in Health Research in Nepal when the research is applicable to animals.
•Require that information given to participants as part of informed consent is in accordance with appropriate national laws and regulations.
•Require documentation of informed consent or waive documentation in accordance with National laws and regulations.
•IRC should also ensure that there is proper supervision and a regular evaluation of the proposal project work once it has been approved.
•Notify investigators and the institution in writing of its decision to approve or disapprove the proposed research activity, or of modifications required to secure IRC approval of the research activity. If the IRC decides to disapprove a research activity, it shall include in its written notification a statement of the reasons for its decision and give the investigator an opportunity to respond in person or in writing.
•Suspend or terminate approval of research that is not being conducted in accordance with the IRC's requirements or that has been associated with unexpected serious harm to participants. Any suspension or termination of approval shall include a statement of the reasons for the IRC's action and shall be reported promptly to the investigator, appropriate institutional official and the department or agency head.
•IRC should coordinate for technical and financial support from institutional source/donor partners to conduct research identified in institutional research agenda. It would have key role in communicating needs for the research and also it will be pivotal in supporting research coordination efforts.
•IRC should mobilize network of working groups to respond to discrete issues. It should be enable the pooling of resources for different health researches based on need and priority health problems.

Notice:
Any research going to conduct by students or staff of NAIHS needs to be approved ethically by Institutional Review Committee of NAIHS. For this researcher needs to submit research proposal written in research protocol format developed by IRC which is available in Community Medicine Department.
Researcher needs to pay Rs 200 for each protocol. They have to deposit this much amount in following account of Laxmi bank and bring voucher to get research Protocol from the office assistance of Community Medicine Department.
