World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day 2021

Introduction

Medical Education Department in collaboration with Department of Community Medicine, NAIHS-COM conducted a webinar via zoom on 18th June 2021.

The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) happens each year on June 15th. It was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 66/127, December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.

Elderly age group has been defined as a chronological age of 65 years old or older. In Nepal, most common older persons abuse was neglect (34.8%), followed by showing disrespect (34.8%), verbal abuse (25.3%), economic abuse (8.1%), physical abuse (5.7%) and emotional abuse (5.1%)

Objectives:

•To update on elderly abuse.
•To raise awareness about elderly abuse.

Activities:

A webinar was conducted to discuss on elderly abuse, its types, status and current scenario in Nepal and worldwide via zoom meeting. Participants were shared Zoom Meeting ID and password for the webinar via mail and viber.

B)Participants: Total 44 participants were present, they were faculty members of NAIHS including staffs, faculties from Shree Birendra Hospital, members of NESCOM, Representative from Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens and Mental Health sub-cluster, Ministry of Health and population. The chief guests were Honorable Dr. Surya Prasad Dhungel, Member National Human Rights Commission and Maj. Gen. Prof Dr Nagendra Bdr K.C. (Retd), Executive Director of NAIHS.

Outcomes:

The Power point presentation was made by all the speakers about their respective topics which cleared the participants about the topic effectively. The presentations mainly included, definition of elderly abuse, its types and status in Nepal and worldwide. A healthy discussion was done by participants regarding the topic with the speakers who tacitly cleared their questions. After the session, participants were able to know the current status of elderly abuse and steps to prevent elderly abuse.
